Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Climate Action, Environment & Communications, Jack Chambers TD has said that this year’s World Oceans Day is yet another reminder that we must implement changes to protect our seas.
Fianna Fáil put forward plans for the introduction of an Oceans Act earlier this year which would see increases to both the number of protected areas and the levels of protections afforded to them.
Deputy Chambers said: “The Marine sector is a vital part of Ireland’s economy and as an island nation, our culture. Protecting and maintaining the quality of those oceans is a pressing concern for the long-term health of our state. This special relationship also comes with a special responsibility that falls on the shoulders of every government to hold this heritage in good stead for future generations.
“Despite this, we are nowhere near the 2020 target to have 10% of marine area designated. The next government will require a step change in approach to protecting our marine ecosystems. An Oceans Act would mean that we would be far better placed to meet our commitments in 2030,” concluded Deputy Chambers.
