Barry Cowen TD, the Fianna Fáil candidate in the European Elections for the Midlands North West, has welcomed that the Irish Government confirmed it would recognise the State of Palestine on May 28th.
“This is an important step showing our solidarity with the Palestinian people but also our commitment to peace in the region. A two-state solution is the only option to bring long term peace.
“I am proud of the Government and indeed my party Leader Micheál Martin in delivering this. I will not be found wanting in my support for peace. As a nation, we know only too well the long term affects of conflict.
“Ireland believes that both Israelis and Palestinians have an equal right to self-determination, peace, security and dignity for Israelis and Palestinians alike. I along with my colleagues are calling for the EU to follow suit, and recognise the Palestinian State, based on the 1967 borders. If elected, I will use my full power to deliver this. The EU must do the right thing by the Palestinian people, added Cowen.
“The unspeakable pain and the horrific scenes of death and destruction are harrowing. A cease fire must be immediate and the longer term two state solution delivered to bring any long term peace to the area. The EU has been far too quiet on this matter and not provided action or sanctions on Israel. War crimes are being committed and the EU needs to now stand up and offer real solutions. If elected, I will use my voice to ensure that the EU responds accordingly” concluded Cowen.
