Dermot Fitzpatrick served as a TD for the Dublin Central constituency from 1987 to 1992 and 2002 to 2007. In addition, he served as Senator from 1997 to 2002. He also served as councillor on Dublin City Council. He retired from national politics in 2007. Prior to his entry into politics, he worked as a family doctor and dentist.
Commenting on his death, An Taoiseach said “I am very sorry to learn of the very sad passing of Dermot Fitzpatrick. Dermot was a true gentleman with a wonderful attitude to life. As a GP and as a public representative, he looked after people right across the city without fear or favour. He represented people with an unwavering passion and commitment, always seeking to improve their lives. Dermot was a highly effective public representative whose passion for his constituents and work was evident every time he spoke to, or met with, colleagues. In addition to his effectiveness and passion for people, I remember a man who was always warm and welcoming. I was privileged to serve in Dáil Eireann with him. He was a very insightful, intelligent and caring man.
"On my own behalf and on behalf of the Fianna Fáil Organisation, I want to express my deepest condolences to the Fitzpatrick family at this very difficult time: to his wife Mary, his daughter Senator Mary Fitzpatrick and to his other children Aindriu, Niamh, and Sinead, along with his grandchildren and extended family and friends in Dublin Central and beyond at this difficult and sad time.”
