Statement from Taoiseach Micheál Martin on passing of Councillor Noel Collins

Published on: 17 June 2022

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Noel Collins, who in almost 55 years of dedicated and unbroken public service truly earned the title ‘Father of Cork County Council’.

First elected as a councillor in Midleton in the late 60s, Noel was the longest serving elected representative in the State, and never tired from fighting for the most vulnerable in his community.

I regarded Noel as a friend, and always admired his great commitment to helping the less well off.

He was very popular in Midleton, and his background as social worker defined Noel’s unwavering dedication to social justice, and framed his personal touch in advocating for those he represented.

He will be sorely missed by the people of Cork, and political colleagues across the divide.

My deepest sympathies go to Noel’s family, friends and all the people he represented.
