Senator Lisa Chambers, Fianna Fáil European Election candidate for the Midlands North West, has voiced strong concerns regarding the impact of imported produce on Irish farmers. This comes in light of new records set by Brazilian beef exports, which highlight the growing trend of importing foreign produce to the detriment of local agriculture.
"Brazil's beef exports have reached a new monthly record of 236,842 tonnes in April 2024, surpassing their previous high from December 2023. This trend is alarming for our local farmers who are struggling to compete with the influx of cheaper imports," Senator Chambers stated.
Senator Chambers emphasised the need to prioritise local produce to support Irish farmers and ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector. "Our farmers produce some of the highest quality beef in the world. Yet, the constant importation of foreign beef at lower prices is undermining their efforts and threatening their livelihoods," she said.
Senator Chambers called on the government to implement policies that protect local agriculture and reduce dependency on imported produce. "We must take decisive action to support our farmers. This includes fair pricing, robust marketing of Irish produce, and policies that favour local over imported products," she urged.
Highlighting the broader implications, Senator Chambers noted, "By prioritising Irish produce, we not only support our farmers but also ensure food security, promote sustainable practices, and boost the local economy. The government must act now to prevent further damage to our agricultural sector."
