O’Sullivan: HHC urgently needs to be banned to stop it destroying lives

Ludicrous scenario of teenagers buying HHC legally must end

Fianna Fáil TD Christopher O’Sullivan has called for an immediate ban on a semi-synthetic drug HHC in a bid to stop it destroying teenagers’ lives.

The Cork South West TD said it is ludicrous that HHC (hexahydrocannabinol) is not illegal and is currently available to purchase in vapes and edibles when evidence shows it is causing psychosis in children and teenagers.

Deputy O’Sullivan said: “We need to urgently implement a ban on semi-synthetic cannabinoids or HHCs.

“This is becoming a huge issue across the country due to a loophole in the law which means it is not classified as a controlled substance. It’s not acceptable that adults and children can legally buy a highly addictive drug.

“Kids are getting their hands on these vapes and inhaling this dangerous drug which is more addictive than cannabis.

“Vapes are aimed at young people and we now have a ludicrous situation where teenagers can legally walk into a vape shop and purchase a drug that is known to be dangerous and detrimental to their mental health. It is just like the head shops years ago.

“The College of Psychiatrists of Ireland has warned of the huge risk of psychosis from vaping this drug. The evidence shows it is destroying young people’s lives. We have to heed their warning.

“This cannot continue. I’m calling on the Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee TD, to update the list of prohibited substances with immediate effect.”
