Oscar Traynor development gets the go ahead after decades lying idle - McAuliffe

Written by David Lynch | 26 November 2021
Fianna Fáil T.D for Dublin North West, and Vice Chairperson of the Oireachtas Housing Committee , Paul McAuliffe, has welcomed the decision of Dublin City Councillors to approve the Oscar Traynor Lands Housing initiative. The council voted 36 in favour of the deal last night with 23 against.

The deal will see 853 new homes built at Oscar Traynor Road, 40 per cent of which will be used for social housing, 40 per cent for cost rental homes, and 20 per cent sold to low- and middle-income workers qualifying for the upcoming affordable purchase scheme.

Welcoming the deal McAuliffe commented, "This is 100% public housing on public land. No open market 'for profit' sales.

"Not only did Sinn Fein vote against 853 public homes on Oscar Traynor last night, they voted against a deal better than their 2015 and 2019 proposals.

“This is a vastly improved deal on the one presented to Councillors last year. Thanks to Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien and the Housing for All plan, this deal will deliver much needed public housing on public lands in our city. I particularly welcome the new tenure mix and affordable purchase option. This deal also includes almost 1700 Sq.M. mixed use and community facilities, a crèche and over 3.6 hectares of the highest quality public open space and parks. After over forty years lying idle a planning application will be lodged by end Q2 next year.”
