Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Bay South Jim O'Callaghan, has welcomed news that over 6,300 people have applied to become a Garda under the most recent recruitment campaign, an increase on the 5,000 people who applied last year.
Deputy O'Callaghan who successfully campaigned for the entry age limit of 35 to be raised said he was particularly pleased to see such a strong response from people aged between 35 and 50 which represented over a third of the applications.
The Party spokesperson on Justice said, "Fianna Fáil in Government is determined to build stronger and safer communities. Unfortunately, there is a law and order problem in our cities and rural towns. This can only be adequately confronted by Gardaí on the ground.
"I have always been and remain of the view that people in their 30s and older looking for a career change should be targeted for membership of the Gardai. By removing arbitrary age barriers and embracing diversity, we are fostering a stronger, more resilient force capable of addressing the complex challenges of modern society.
"The overwhelming response from individuals aged over 35 underscores the success of recent reforms aimed at enhancing recruitment practices and highlights the previously untapped potential within our communities.
"An Garda Síochána have been allocated a budget of €2.35 billion in 2024 –a 25% increase since 2020. This funding will continue to allow for the continued recruitment of Garda members and staff this year, as well as ensuring Gardaí have the equipment, technology, facilities and fleet they need to carry out their vital work.
"I would like to extend my gratitude to all those who have expressed interest in serving their communities and building a safer, more inclusive society for generations to come.''
