Fianna Fail MEP Billy Kelleher has said that the Government’s new National Financial Literacy Strategy is an integral part of protecting consumers from unscrupulous scam artists and fraudsters.
Kelleher was commenting after receiving a briefing from the Department of Finance today along with a number of other Irish MEPs in the European Parliament in Brussels.
“We are all highly aware of the significant levels of fraud taking place in financial services over phones and online.
“This new strategy with the associated education in measures, a new website, financialliteracy.ie and supports for adults.
“Knowing how to make use of financial services and products without putting yourself at risk of fraud is a key skill for all people.
“We also need to give all people, young and old alike, the ability to better understand financial services such as taking out a loan or a mortgage, knowing the difference between Hire Purchase and PCP when buying a car or the importance of insurance for a home or when going on holiday.
“I look forward to seeing this strategy being rolled out across the country, and will play my part as a member of the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee to support the work,” concluded Kelleher.
