Local Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North West has called on the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly to consider expanding access to the shingles vaccine through the Medical Card and Drug Payment Schemes.
This move would ensure that vulnerable individuals, particularly older adults, have access to essential preventive care without facing financial barriers.
Currently, the shingles vaccine is not available under the Medical Card or Drug Payment Schemes.
Deputy Michael Moynihan said, "Access to the vaccine is a matter of equity and public health. It is not right that only those who can afford it privately are protected. I am calling on the Minister for Health to urgently consider including the shingles vaccine in the Medical Card and Drug Payment Schemes so that everyone, regardless of income, can benefit. If not immediately included in the Medical Card scheme, the shingles vaccine in my view, should be made available to those aged over 75 and immunocompromised individuals as a starting point, with a plan to extend access to those aged 60 and over in the coming years.
"I am urging the Minister to act now so that no one is left behind when it comes to protecting their health. Shingles is preventable, and it's time we ensure everyone has the opportunity to get vaccinated."
