McAuliffe welcomes extension of child benefit for 18-year-olds in full-time education

Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin North West Paul McAuliffe, has welcomed Cabinet approval to extend child benefit to 18-year-olds from May 1st, for those in full-time education or who have a disability.

The Fianna Fáil Spokesman for Social Protection Protection previously called for the payment to be altered to reflect that most families have children who are in full-time education until the age of 18 and beyond.

Deputy McAuliffe said, "Extending child benefit payments to parents with children in full-time education up to the age of 18 is a vital step in supporting families and ensuring the well-being of young individuals. I very much welcome news today that the Government is in a position to now implement this measure from May 1st as opposed to September as initially expected.

"Fianna Fáil in Government understand that the financial demands on families with children in full time education can be substantial. Parents are having to support their children for longer now that kids are in school later in life. Today's announcement is in acknowledgement of those expenses and recognises the evolving nature of modern education.

“For many working families this is the only social welfare payment they receive from the State and they rely on it to help pay for essentials. We must pave the way for a more educated, skilled, and prosperous society by supporting families in providing for their children's educational needs."
