Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin North West, Paul McAuliffe has called on the Department of Transport to examine the temporary use of private buses and coaches to meet the extra capacity required in the public transport system due to social distancing requirements.
Deputy McAuliffe said: “As a result of Covid 19 many private coach operators have been unable to work due to the closure of schools and cancellation of events. As a result, an entire fleet of vehicles are currently not in use while Dublin Buses are forced to leave passengers at bus stops due to restrictions based on social distancing.”
“As more people return to work the pressure on bus spaces from commuters will only become acute. The Department of Transport should work with private operators and examine if their fleet can supplement the city’s bus network and help commuters avoid relying on their cars,” concluded Deputy McAuliffe.
