Fianna Fail has built more social homes than in any year since 1975 and the highest number of affordable homes ever – O’Brien
Speaking at the launch of a new social housing development in Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin Fianna Fáil candidate for Fingal East and Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien laid out his Party’s plans for record social and affordable home building and marked progress in social and affordable home building.
The Minister officially opened ten new social homes on Sussex Street in Dún Laoghaire which were delivered by Sophia Housing Association and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council with the support of the Government. The development involved the extension and refurbishment of the former Credit Union offices on Sussex Street and are an illustration of the objective Fianna Fáil has to have more people back living in our cities, towns and villages.
Last year, with Fianna Fáil in Government, Ireland built more social houses than in any year since 1975 and the highest levels of affordable purchase homes ever.
Commenting at the launch Minister O’Brien stated “The highest social housing build numbers in half a century and the highest ever affordable home delivery levels all point to the fact we have turned the dial on housing. High quality developments like todays are testament to that progress. However, we need to do much, much more.
“The Fianna Fáil housing plan sets out a €7.5bn annual investment to build 12,000 social houses and 10,000 affordable homes every year. We need policy stability, certainty and ambition to achieve those targets. The record commencement levels of new homes reflect the momentum building up in the sector with 250 new homes started every working day this year.
“Opposition plans will jeopardise the progress being made by generating planning delays, abolishing the LDA and scrapping key first time buyer supports that boost housing supply,” Minister O’Brien concluded.
