Fees must be waived for all nurses looking to return to work – Lahart

Written by Alan Dennedy | 02 April 2020

Fianna Fail Spokesperson on Dublin, John Lahart TD, has called on The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) to waive fees for nurses that have never been registered here before.

The current fee waived here does not apply to nurses who have trained and worked as nurses in the UK and who now wish to return to Ireland to assist in the current health care crisis.

Deputy Lahart said: “The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland announced last month that it was waiving the fees normally charged to return to the Irish Register of Nurses and Midwives. However, nurses who have never been registered here before are still being charged the fee.

“This affects those nurses who have trained and worked as nurses in the UK and now wish to return home to assist in the ongoing COVID-10 crisis. Everyone should be allowed to have the fee waived given the current health crisis the country is facing.

“Given the many sacrifices being made by so many individuals and organizations during this very challenging time I would like to know the rationale around the difficulty in waiving the considerable fee, for the duration of the crisis/emergency that the country is facing for nurses who trained in the UK and now wish to come home,” concluded Deputy Lahart.
