Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin North West, Paul McAuliffe, has said it's a privilege to be appointed as Party spokesperson on social protection.
Following his appointment, Deputy McAuliffe said, "Fianna Fáil in Government remains committed to helping protect the most vulnerable, families and businesses from the rising cost of living through targeted welfare supports. Prior to entering the Dáil I worked for some time as a Tus Supervisor, so I have a really good understanding of the work of the Department and the impact it can have.
"Earlier this year, the Government announced details of a €410 million social welfare package to support families, pensioners, carers and people with disabilities, as part of an overall €1.2 billion cost of living package. These measures, in addition to the €2.2 billion of supports in Budget 2023, underline the Government’s continued commitment to address the increased cost of living being experienced by people relying on social welfare payments and by working families.
"We know the cost of living remains very high and that people are under pressure. I am delighted to confirm that over 1.3m people will receive a €200 lump sum spring bonus payment from next Monday April 24 which will be followed by an extra €100 per child for people receiving Child Benefit in June. Parents who receive the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance will also get an additional €100 for each child this summer.''
Deputy McAuliffe, who takes over the role from Minister of State Dara Calleary, concluded by saying, "I look forward to meeting the key stakeholders over the coming weeks to learn more and to work with them to support those in need, older people, working families and many others too.
