Consumers must be vigilant of scams during COVID 19 crisis – Chambers

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Communications, Jack Chambers has called on consumers to be vigilant for scammers seeking to defraud people during the COVID-19 crisis.

There is currently a scam which involves people receiving a text message pretending to be from An Post and asking the person to click on a link in relation to collecting a parcel.

Deputy Chambers said: “There is a sophisticated scam doing the rounds which claims to have been issued by An Post. It claims that a package has been stopped at the depot and asks customers to click on a link bringing them to another webpage.

“Gardaí have issued a warning about this scam and similar types of fake advertisements during the on-going COVID-19. People should be vigilant as scammers are trying to take advantage of people during this vulnerable time.

“If it sounds too good to be true, then it most likely is. I would ask people to keep a watchful eye on any elderly or vulnerable person who may be targeted in these elaborate scams. It is despicable that people are trying to make a quick profit during these testing times for the country but that is what we are facing. I would urge anyone who has any information regarding such scams to call the gardaí immediately,” concluded Deputy Chambers.
