Fianna Fáil TD for Limerick Niall Collins has called on insurers to confirm that motor policies will not be voided if a claimant has had their NCT suspended as a result of the COVID19 pandemic.
Deputy Collins has welcomed the decision to delay testing for the NCT and CVRT but says the insurance companies must ensure that people are still covered if they have an accident.
“The current situation is unprecedented and steps have had to be taken to put the health and safety of our citizens first. This includes the suspension of NCT for cars and the CVRT for commercial vehicles. This is the right call at this time”, said Deputy Collins.
“The insurance industry must play its part too and operate in good faith. Unfortunately, this has not been the case in terms of certain business cover, which is not being honoured.
“I am calling for assurances from the insurance companies that drivers will not be penalised if they have an accident during the crisis and their NCT is out of date. Insurance companies should honour their policies for the duration of the COVID19 pandemic.
“Insurers need to clarify this issue for drivers and I am calling on them to do so as a matter of urgency”.
