Fianna Fáil Senator Lorraine Clifford Lee, has called for the implementation of mandatory custodial sentences for sexual assault and violent offences, emphasising the urgent need for reduced leniency in sentencing laws to combat these crimes.

"There is a small but significant cohort of men who commit violent acts without fear of consequences," she said. "Such violence must not be accepted by our society, and we need to communicate this clearly from the outset. Mandatory custodial sentences and reduced leniency in sentencing are crucial steps towards ensuring justice and deterring violent crime.

"We must hold perpetrators of violent crimes fully accountable for their actions. Ensuring that offenders face significant penalties without leniency would send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated in our society.

"It is clear that we need to strengthen our laws related to all forms of violence, specifically focusing on offenders who exhibit threatening behavior, which could escalate into more severe violence if not addressed promptly."

Clifford-Lee also addressed the broader context of violence, noting that men are also victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

"Women are entitled to know that heinous crimes against them will be prosecuted robustly with appropriate and commensurate sentencing imposed by the Courts," she said.

"We know that men are also victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, and it's important to note that my focus here does not come at the expense of their protection and safety."

In conclusion, Senator Clifford-Lee reaffirmed her dedication to pushing for reforms that ensure justice is served for those who are victims of violence. "I remain committed to advocating for the rights and safety of women and indeed all victims of violence and I will continue to push for reforms that ensure justice is appropriately served.''
