Clarity required on implications for Aer Lingus amidst IAG restructuring speculation – Mac Sharry

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Transport, Tourism, and Sport Marc Mac Sharry TD has written to Sean Doyle, Chief Executive Officer of Aer Lingus, to seek clarity on implications for Aer Lingus and its staff amidst speculation of a restructuring of IAG Group.

Deputy Mac Sharry has sought clarity following comments by Mr. Willie Walsh, Chairperson of the International Airlines Group (IAG), at the House of Commons Transport Committee who said IAG is, “embarking on restructuring and have made it clear that it is group-wide restructuring; it is not specific to British Airways”.

Deputy Mac Sharry said, “The comments from the Mr. Willie Walsh are a matter for concern particularly among the 4,500 staff employed by Aer Lingus. They are fearful of any job losses which may arise from proposed restructuring.

“Given the reduced passenger numbers I appreciate there may have to be changes to the operations within IAG, of which Aer Lingus is a member, but the comments from Mr. Walsh only have created an air of uncertainty for employees in our flag ship airline at this time.

“Aer Lingus has always been and remains a crucial part of Ireland’s success as an outward facing economy. I believe it is vital that the airline is supported through this critical period.

“The employees also need to be led and supported through this uncertain time in the industry. I look forward to engaging further with Sean Doyle and his colleagues in Aer Lingus on this matter,” concluded Deputy Mac Sharry.
