Businesses should avail of the broad range of supports available to prepare for Brexit – McGreehan

Fianna Fáil Senator for Louth Erin McGreehan has urged businesses to engage with supports as today marks 100 days until the end of the transition period.

A new Government Brexit Readiness Action Plan was launched on 9 September and Ireland continues to support the closest possible future relationship between the EU and the UK, but it is prudent to plan on this basis to ensure that we are prepared for 1 January 2021.

Senator McGreehan said: “On 9 September, the Government published an updated Brexit Readiness Action Plan. This Plan supports and promotes the necessary preparations for the end of the transition period.

“Regardless of the outcome of the EU-UK negotiations, a number of outcomes are already clear.  The most significant of which is that, in less than four months, the UK will be outside the EU’s Single Market and Customs Union.

“This means that any business that moves goods from, to or through Britain will be subject to a range of customs formalities, SPS checks and other regulatory requirements that do not apply to such trade today.

“The Government is urging businesses, no matter how small, to take immediate steps to understand the impacts any new rules or processes will have on their operations.  With less than four months until the end of transition, time is short, and action is required now. “

“Failure to engage with, and implement, these new rules will prevent businesses from trading with Britain and could lead to significant delays in moving goods to, from or through Britain from 1 January 2021,” concluded the Senator.
