Fianna Fáil Leader and TD for Cork South Central Micheál Martin says the decision by Brittany Ferries to axe its Cork-Roscoff service is a significant blow.
He says every effort must be made to secure new services out of the Port of Cork.
Deputy Martin said, “This is very disappointing news for Cork, particularly when the route was so popular. Nearly 100,000 passengers used the service every season and the company’s decision to transfer the Roscoff route is regrettable.
“This is blow for Cork and the South West region. The Cork route provided options for people travelling to France, not only from Cork itself, but from Kerry, Limerick and the South West and Mid-West regions.
“I will work alongside the Port of Cork, to work with ferry companies to secure new routes out of Cork. The port is undergoing a major investment and development phase and we need to ensure that we can attract sustainable business options so that jobs and the local economy can be increased and improved.
“The decision announced today is a serious blow for the Cork region. Infrastructure in the city and county will have to be prioritised by the next government. Major projects like the Dunkettle Interchange and the M20 are badly needed and must be delivered as a matter of urgency”.
