Bertie backs Blaney in Euro race

Former Taoiseach and peace builder, Bertie Ahern, says he is delighted to support Fianna Fáil candidate, Senator Niall Blaney, in the June European Election poll.

Mr Ahern, who is renowned for his efforts to deliver the Good Friday Agreement, said Niall Blaney is ‘the border candidate’ with all the right credentials for the job.

Mr Ahern said: “Our border counties deserve strong representation in Europe. The region must not be treated as a backwater because it’s on the edge of Europe or through poor representation.

“Niall is the person who will have the region’s best interests at heart and will give strong, principled leadership where it matters. I’m delighted to give him my full support and endorsement.”

Senator Blaney said: “To receive the support of a leader of the stature of Bertie Ahern is a wonderful boost to my campaign to win a seat for Fianna Fáil.

“I’m the only border candidate in this election - the candidate who will fully commit to being the standard-bearer for Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Sligo, Louth and Donegal.

“Bertie is a revered and greatly admired former leader of my party and former Taoiseach who worked tirelessly for peace in Northern Ireland. What we have today is due in no small way to his dedication to the task of peacebuilding.

“There is much to do in Europe. We have the renegotiation of the CAP where it will be vitally important to secure the best possible deal for our farmers and a continuation of the nitrates derogation.

“The region has been left unattended and ignored for too long, and I intend to change that from day one.

“On June 7th, I’m asking you to vote Blaney Number One and also show support for my colleagues on the Fianna Fáil ticket, Lisa Chambers and Barry Cowen.”
