Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign and European Affairs, SeánHaughey has said the actions of the Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orbán cannot go unchallenged.

Deputy Haughey made his comments following the introduction of new measures which allow the Prime Minister to rule by decree and without time limits.

“Fianna Fáil has long been a strong and vocal critic of the actions of Victor Orbán but the most recent measures announced in Hungary are an affront to democracy and cannot go unchallenged”.

“Hungary is a member of the European Union but is not acting in accordance with European law, values or ideals and I believe that action must be taken in response to this. It is my view that the EU and the institutions must take a stronger line with Hungary and use the tools at their disposal to try and compel Prime Minister Orbán to change course”.

“I also believe that Ireland should not shy away from sending a strong message that democracy, the rule of law and right to free and independent media are not negotiable in a European Union member state,” concluded Deputy Haughey”.
