Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Transport, Tourism, and Sport Marc Mac Sharry says the announcement today from the Department of Transport, Tourism, and Sport regarding the FAI will secure the immediate future of Irish football.
“The announcement today is welcome following a number of challenging months for Irish football. The future of Irish football was in real jeopardy. There was a very real chance if the FAI went under we would lose the international teams, women’s teams, the League of Ireland, and under age teams.
“This would have created a massive vacuum in communities up and down the country. Local clubs offer so much to their surroundings it was imperative a rescue deal was agreed to allow these clubs to function.
“In particular, the return of Sport Ireland funding is welcome, as are the conditions this funding is subject to.
“I want to wish new President of the FAI Gerry McAnaney well in his recent election. The experience of the individuals who sought election to this role shows the talent within the organisation and the desire to set the FAI on the right path. This includes Sligo Rovers Chairperson Martin Heraghty who also went for the role but was unsuccessful on this occasion.
“Today can be considered a fresh start for the Association. The conditions set out must be adhered to. We need to ensure the mistakes of the past are not replicated in the future.
“I look forward to working with new the leadership team in the months ahead to ensure Irish football is on the right path for years to come,” concluded Deputy Mac Sharry.
